Mexico City.- The history of Mexico is full of episodes that have become symbols of our past to this day. One of these many cases is one that relates when Hernán Cortés and his indigenous allies were defeated by the Mexica in Mexico-Teotihuacan. The defeat caused the winner to shed tears in front of an old tree.

This event in the history of Mexico was recorded on July 1, 1520 and is known as “sad night”.

Although 500 years have passed since that event and on countless occasions we have heard the story sad night treeFew of us remember that it is an ahuhute tree, considered sacred and mysterious to the natives.

It is located on the historic ahuehuete Mexico-Tacuba street in the Tacuba neighborhood of delegation Miguel Hidalgo in Mexico City.

Although this tree has been around for hundreds of years, it has only recently become of great importance to the residents of the capital, as this species was selected to replace the iconic palm tree in the CDMX at Reforma Roundabout.
