This computer imaging specialist, who develops algorithms for observing distant events, helped create the program that led to the launch of the first image of a black hole In a distant galaxy in 2019.

She quickly became a global science superstar and was invited to speak before Congress about her work.

Now, it has once again played a vital role in creating an innovative image The supermassive black hole at the center of our own galaxy, the Milky WayA cosmic body known as Sagittarius A*.

His working group in the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, which revealed the stunning image on Thursday, was tasked with piecing it together from a mass of data collected by telescopes around the world.

Spoke with Bouman AFP Soon after the big announcement.

Q – How does this discovery compare to 2019? ,

Answer – The first one was very exciting because it was the first, and it was wonderful to be able to see a black hole for the first time. But I think the holy grail of the Event Horizon Telescope has always been the Sagittarius A* image.

This is because we have a lot more information from other comments about what Sgr A* would have looked like. And by being able to see a picture of that, it’s much easier for us to see how it matches up with what’s expected from previous observations and theory.

So I think that even though this is the second image we show, it’s actually much more exciting for that reason, we can use it to further test our understanding of gravity.”

Question: Why was it more difficult to obtain an image of “our” black hole than the far away M87*?

A – We collected data for M87* and Sgr A* in the same week in 2017, but it took longer to image Sgr A* than M87*.

There are several other things in Sgr A* that make it more difficult for us to take an image. In fact, we are looking at the black hole through the bottom of the galaxy. And this means that the gas in the galaxy actually scatters the image. This makes it appear as if we are looking at the black hole through a frosted window, as in a shower. it’s a challenge.

Although I would say that the biggest challenge before us is that the black hole is growing very fast. In M87* and Sgr A* the gas moves at almost the same speed.

But while it takes days or weeks to make a full orbit around M87*, for Sgr A*, it is evolving by the minute.

Q – What are black holes and why are they so fascinating?

A – They break from what we know on Earth. Light cannot escape from them and they distort the space-time around them. They are this mysterious thing, and I think they capture our imagination. What’s better than working on a black hole? And to be able to take a picture of that, that you shouldn’t be able to see… I think it’s fascinating.

Q- What are you waiting for the most? The movie A Black Hole?

A – I think this is just the beginning. Now that we have these extreme gravity laboratories, we can improve our instruments and algorithms, so that we can see more of them and do more science experiments.

We’ve made that first attempt at getting a movie and we’ve made a lot of progress, but we’re still not at the point where we can say “this is what Sgr A* looks like minute by minute.” So we’re going to try to add new telescopes to the world, collect more data, to show us something that we know for sure.
