AEB appoints Maria Abascal as its new general director

The Spanish Banking Association (AEB) has appointed Maria Abascal general director, a position in which she will continue to be responsible for public policies, an area that includes banking, regulation, operations, payment methods and all activities related to digitization, AEB said in a statement.

Abascal also considers the coordination of regional initiatives and the sustainability sector. With this appointment, AEB seeks to unify the prudent, digital and sustainability vision and that is related to the social contribution of banking, in particular through the development of strategic protocols to strengthen the sector’s social and sustainable commitment.

The Directive will continue to represent AEB in the highest governing bodies of the European Banking Union, as a member of the Executive Committee and as an alternative on the Board of Directors.

Abascal has about 15 years of experience in the financial sectorHaving developed a large part of his professional career at the BBVA, both in the public and private sectors, where he was Global Director of Institutional Relations and Chief Economist for Regulation and Public Policies.

Prior to this, he served as Deputy Director General for Financial and Strategic Analysis in the General Directorate of Treasury and Financial Policy and in the Cabinet of Executive Vice President at the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade (ICEX).

María Abascal is a commercial technician and state economist with a degree in economics from Complutense University in Madrid.

Similarly, AEB has announced incorporation as the Presidential Coordinator. David Del Cura, A trained journalist with experience in both media and administration.

The association highlights that David “offers a view of the socio-political reality of the country” which will be “very useful” to guide the work of the AEB.
